LOCAL TOURISM

Once you are here you will discover the term Le Pays Cathar (the cathar land) which was once home to the Cathars, a religious group who were eventually exterminated by the Albigensians.

Catherism spread from the Balkans to Toulouse , Albi and Carcassonne during the 11th to 13th centuries, however in 1208, Pope Innocent III preached a crusade against the Cathars and joined forces with the Albigenses in a missions to wipe them out.

After long sieges, the major Cathar centres at Béziers, Carcassonne , the village of Minerve and the dramatically sited fortresses of Montségur, Quéribus and Peyrepertuse were taken and hundreds of Cathars were slaughtered and burnt.

OTHER INFORMATION

Carcassonne cité from a far looks like a fairy tale castle, gleaming in the sunlight and illuminated at night it is truly breath taking. Built originally by the Gauls, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Franks it was later used as one of the major strongholds for the Cathars. But in 1659, when Rousillon was annexed to France, Carcassonne Cité started to fall into disrepair, by the 18th century the Cité was little more than a slum.

In 1850, the Cité was saved by the intervention of Viollet-le-Duc, who felt passionate about the Cité and persuaded the Commission of Historical Monuments to undertake the restoration work in 1844. The restoration was finally completed in 1910.
