LOCAL TOURISM
The Cévennes region is a quaint and rugged area southwest of the Ardèche; a sunny region where the smells of thyme, rosemary and lavender are omnipresent. While walking the numerous mountain paths, you will see eagles, falcons, buzzards and other birds of prey. You will also encounter wild orchids and eatable mushrooms. It is an oasis of peace and quiet. A place where the sound is carried by the silence..
You can reach Saint-André de Valborgne by following D709, in between Saint-Jean du Gard (30 min. drive) and Florac (40 min.) (Location of theregion and the valley).
From prehistory to the Celtic’ tribes, from the Romans to the monks of St Marcel de Fontfouillouse Abbey, life has always been fully present in our country. At the end of the 18th century during the religious wars, Castanet, an Aigoual native chief, immortalized the Camisard spirit. The region drew its resources from agriculture and from the ancient woolen industry. During th e19th century the silk industry was widely developed, and many spinning mills were established. Brown trout, wild boar, wild mushrooms, chestnuts, huney and pèlardons(famous goats’ cheese) are the most tasty specialities of Cevenole cuisine.
Foot-paths are indicated at the entrance of each village and wind trough heather Moors, chestnut trees, pines and green oak woods. Follow the foot-paths guide. The original name ‘Valley Bornes’ became’Valley Borgne’ over the centuries, and means, according to 15th century latin texts : ‘THE SPRING VALLEY’. Both the Marquaires Pass ( from Mercury, god of the travellers) and Mount Aigoual (the Water Mountain) are situated on the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. From the most ancient times to the dawn of the third millenium, how many springs have gushed and soothed the country’s life where the people of today can regenerate their heart, body and soul.
